cc_licenses.jpg

What follows are sources of sound and music recordings that are shared for use under CC (creative Commons) Licenses and so permission for their use has already been granted. In the US, the act of making a recording invokes a copyright. If an artist uses a Creative Commons license, he/she has decided to make the recording available to others to use and has set the conditions for that use.

Please ensure students understand and respect the license provisions the artists have chosen for their work.(Note: 'no derivatives' in music means no messing with the original!)

Scroll down to the section on "Free Student Educational Use"
Freeplay offers "free" master and synchronization licenses to qualifying students for class projects that are not broadcast or distributed outside of the classroom. We often work with schools, school districts and universities to customize per-project and blanket licenses which will give students and teachers a legal music resource for any projects made for broadcast or distribution. Please ask us about our educational discounts!

"The Freesound Project aims to create a huge collaborative database of audio snippets, samples, recordings, bleeps, ... We are looking for institutions and schools who want to help us with this effort. Do you think your institution can help us fill the database? Do you have students who can help us by doing (field-)recordings as assignments? Recordings of instruments?"

"A credit needs to be placed such that a person who wants to know where the music came from should have no difficulty in finding it. If your project has only one piece in it; you can credit it as "Music: Kevin MacLeod". If your project has many pieces from different people, you can credit me as "(name of the pieces of music you are using) Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)."It is important that you replace the word Title with the Actual Title of the piece that you are using!"

musopen.jpg
"Musopen is an online music library of copyright free (public domain) music. We want to give the world access to music without the legal hassles so common today. There is a great deal of music that has expired copyrights, but almost no recordings of this music is in the public domain. We aim to record or obtain recordings that have no copyrights so that our visitors may listen, re-use, or in any way enjoy music. Put simply, our mission is to set music free."

public_domain.jpg

"It is important that you understand the difference between a "musical work" and a "sound recording". A musical work and a sound recording of a musical work have separate copyright protection. The children's song, "Three Blind Mice" is absolutely in the public domain worldwide. You may publish it, record it, sing it, use it in your movie, or do anything else with "Three Blind Mice" that you can ever imagine. However, no sound recordings of "Three Blind Mice" are in the public domain."
